Inspired by a game: Danish robotics-startup wants to solve a growing problem for small and medium-sized businesses

A simple puzzle where the pieces are pushed around via a single free space on the board. That was the inspiration for the Aarhus-startup Kasparium.

Inspiration struck unexpectedly when e-commerce specialist Tommy Bjørbæk and software- and systemsintegrator Morten Bitsch came up with an idea for a new warehouse automation system.

An idea and a concept that has now earned them a ticket to Odense Robotics StartUp Fund, which gives robot and drone startups from Denmark and abroad access to soft funding, and a dedicated incubator environment at the Danish Technological Institute in Odense.

“We observed a gap in the market. Warehouse automation is currently only for the big players, while small and medium-sized warehouses struggle with solutions that are anything but adaptable. What we’re working on is a system that takes up only 50 percent of the space of a traditional warehouse, while being scalable and relocatable if the business outgrows existing premises,” says Morten Bitsch, CEO and co-founder of Kasparium.

Experienced founder duo

Kasparium is looking into a scalable market with high growth rates, which suits the experienced founding duo well.

Tommy Bjørbæk started a successful third-party logistics warehouse in 2015, which had to change locations several times as the business continued to grow.

“I later reflected on what system would have been perfect as my business grew, so we moved from location to location. The conclusion was a modular warehouse automation system that could have easily been adapted to our own business needs at the time,” says Tommy Bjørbæk, founder of Kasparium.

Along his business journey, Tommy met Morten, who has his core competencies in software development and strategic management. It was a match made in heaven, so the two decided to combine their experience, knowledge and skills to start a business.

Danish robotics startup fund and incubator provide “a lot of opportunities”

The space-saving dream of a system consisting of fields of shelves that move as needed will now become a reality through Odense Robotics StartUp Fund & Incubator at the Danish Technological Institute.

Here, the two founders and the rest of their team will benefit from the facilities, expertise and network that will be made available.

“We applied for Odense Robotics StartUp Fund and the incubator at the Danish Technological Institute because we saw that it could give us a lot of opportunities. We saw that it could help us in everything from hardware development to software development and the business model itself,” says Morten.

Through the Odense Robotics StartUp Fund, entrepreneurs are also matched with a number of leading mentors from the robotics industry – including OnRobot CEO Enrico Krog Iversen, former CEO and co-owner of the robot success Universal Robots, and the founder of Mobile Industrial Robots and now CEO of Capra Robotics, Niels Jul Jacobsen.

About the warehouse automation market

The global warehouse automation market was valued at over DKK 160 billion by 2023. The market is expected to grow by around 15 percent in the coming years and reach a size of over DKK 285 billion by 2027, according to statista.
